SHOCKWAVE LITHOTRIPSY FOR RENAL AND URETERIC CALCULI
Nearly 30 years after its revolutionary introduction, shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) is a well-established and safe treatment modality for the majority of stones in upper urinary tract. Generally, in adults with normal anatomy, SWL should be the first-line treatment for non-lower pole stones of < 20 mm in the kidneys and stones of < 10 mm in the ureter. In pediatric urolithiasis, the indications for SWL are similar to those in adults, although even staghorn stones can be treated successfully.
