              Ho Chi Minh City Medical Association (HMA) is a socio-professional organization that rallies medical workers, at college and university level, living and/ or working in Ho Chi Minh City. HMA was founded in 1978 and is currently a member of Ho Chi Minh City Union of Scientific and Technological Associations and Vietnam Medical Association. The mission of HMA is to advance scientific research and application of technologies in the field of medicine in order to upgrade professional competencies of its members. Besides, HMA encourages and motivatesits members to abide bygood medical practice according to the lawsin force, promote medical ethicswith the aim of preservingand enhancingthe prestige and credit of the medical profession. HMA also acts as an officially recognized body to protect the legitimate and legal rights of its members in front of the law and public opinion.

 

Today HMA comprises 63association members which are medical specialty societies, with over 20,000 members working in different medical fields in Ho Chi Minh City. Besides, HMA has one affiliated organization, which is the Medical News Journal.

III.             HMA mission statement

1. As a scientific society, HMA rallies and encourages its members to take an active part in promoting sciences and technologies; providing counseling, counter-arguments and expertise activities in medical field.

2. As a professional association, HMA encourages and motivatesits members to abide bygood medical practice according to the lawsin force, promote medical ethics education and respect,  contribute to providingprofessional training, preserve and enhance the prestige and credit of the medical profession.HMA also acts as an officially recognized body to protect the legitimate and legal rights of its members in front of the law and public opinion.

 

IV. HMA historical milestones

§  1979: The first general meeting and foundation of Ho Chi Minh City Medical Association by the Decree 25/QĐ-UB of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee

§  1987: Ho Chi Minh City Medical Association changed its name to Ho Chi Minh City Association of Medicine and Pharmacy.

§  2004: Ho Chi Minh City Association of Medicine and Pharmacy split into Ho Chi Minh City Association of Pharmacy and Ho Chi Minh City Medical Association (HMA).

§  2005: General meeting of HMA and ratification of modified laws and action plan for the 6th term of office (2005-2009).

§  2009: General meeting and ratification of modified laws and action plan for the 7th term of office (2009-2014)

§  2014: General meeting and ratification of modified laws and action plan for the 8th term of office (2014-2019)

 

V.    HMA over the years

 

Since its foundation, HMA has gone through 8 office terms:

  • Term I(1979-1983): Ho Chi Minh City Medical Association; Chairman: Pharm. Nguyễn Duy Cương, PhD; 41 association members mainly based on location, with 15,726 members  
  • Term II(1983-1987): Ho Chi Minh City Medical Association; Chairman: Prof. DrPhạm Biểu Tâm
  • Term III(1987- 1991): Ho Chi Minh City Association of Medicine and Pharmacy; Chairman:  Dr. Dương Quang Trung, PhD; 17 specialty association members with 7,000 members
  • Term IV(1991-1996): Ho Chi Minh City Association of Medicine and Pharmacy; Chairman:  Dr. Dương Quang Trung; 32 specialty association members with 12,278 members
  • Term V(1996-2004): Ho Chi Minh City Association of Medicine and Pharmacy; Chairman: Pharm. Nguyễn Duy Cương, PhD, 38 specialty associations with 14,282 members
  • TermVI(2004-2009): Ho Chi Minh City Medical Association, Chairman: Dr Dương Quang Trung, PhD; 45 association members with 19,897 members
  • Term VII(2009-2014): Ho Chi Minh City Medical Association; Chairman: Dr Dương Quang Trung; 52 association members with 21,519 members
  • Term VIII(2014- 2019): Ho Chi Minh City Medical Association; Chairman: Dr Trương Thị Xuân Liễu; 63 association members with 23,590 members

 

VI.    HMA main activities  

 

Sciences and technologies  

After 35 years, since its foundation, HMA has made valuable contributions to the advancement of the health profession in Ho Chi Minh City. HMA and its member associations have been very active in promoting education and training, scientific research and application of technologies. Many research studies have been conducted or organized by HMA members; the very highly evaluated ones among them have been awarded in the Annual Contest of Scientific Research and Innovation under the Union of Scientific and Technological Associations of Ho Chi Minh City. Medical continuing education courses, advanced medical skills training sessions organized by HMA are always well attended by its members. 

In recent years, many international conferences, organized by HMA, with the participation of renowned international and in country scientists, provided excellent opportunities for all members to share knowledge and experiences, such as the Asian Bone Conference on osteoporosis in 2008 and 2010, Hospital Management Asia conference in 2009.  

 

Medical information and medical press 

The “Medical News of Ho Chi Minh City”, HMA official journal, is among the most long-standing and well-known medical journals in Vietnam. With over 10,000 copies monthly issued, the journal provides worldwide and national updates in medical fields and publishes original research works which have an important impact on the advancement of medicine in Vietnam.  The journal is also regarded as the HMA bulletin, which is the united voice of its members and spreads information on the activities conducted by HMA and its member associations. On the other hand, the journal acts as a media support for events and activities conducted in the field of health sciences.

The HMA website (www.hoiyhoctphcm.org.vn) was first launched in July 2007. It provides updates on HMA activities related to association development, scientific research and continuing education. Its long term goal is to develop into a platform to rally HMA members and a reliable medical forum for health  professionals and common people.

 

International relations  

      HMA is one of the most prestigious and important scientific societies in the field of medical sciences in Ho Chi Minh City. It brings together leading scientists and clinicians working in specific medical disciplines. It works in partnership with international organizations on scientific research, continuing education, social activities, and scholarship program such as that of Takeda Foundation.

 

Counseling and counter-arguing

As a socio-professional association, HMA rallies health professionals to promote good medical practice, protect the legitimate rights and honor of its members while encouraging and helping them to abide by governmental regulations and current laws in medical practice, to preserve and raise   professional ethics, in order to contribute to the improvement of people’s health and to enhance the reputation and credit of the medical profession in the society.
