The Epidemiological Research Training Course V-1: Short report

The Epidemiological Research Training Course V-1 was held at University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam, August 15-19, 2011. The objectives of the course were to reinforce epidemiology and biostatistics basic knowledge and to provide technical competencies required for research (literature searching, critical appraisal of published medical evidence, study designing, questionnaire development, and data handling). This year’s training course was special because the project was upgraded to HCMC’s accredited Continuous Medical Education course with a sponsorship from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Partnership Program, and supports from HCMC Medical Association, HCMC Health Service, and Japan Epidemiological Association. We registered more than one hundred participants including those from different provinces and one from Juntendo University, Japan. We were honored by the presence of 4 main instructors from Japan (Drs. Chihaya Koriyama, Hirohide Yokokawa, Yuriko Suzuki and Aya Goto) and 1 from Vietnam (Dr. Nguyen Quang Vinh), with Dr. Le Thi Quynh Nga from Hanoi and myself to support their teaching. A special guest speaker from Thailand, Professor Waranuch Pitiphat from Khon Kaen University, Faculty of Dentistry, discussed about the determining causation in epidemiology.

The Training Course V-1 started on Monday (15th) and ended Friday (19th). The course started with an opening remark by Dr. Pham Qui Trong from UMP Department of International Relations. Every day we had 2 classes: morning and afternoon classes. During the morning class (9:00- 11:30), participants attended lectures and were subjected to assignments for a better understanding of some epidemiology and statistics key concepts such as major study designs, biases, confounders, etc. The afternoon class (13:00- 16:00) was dedicated to advanced mini-lectures and group work. Each group was guided by one Vietnamese assistant instructor and supervised by one Japanese instructor. One hundred participants out of 158 registrants regularly came and completed the course, with a completion rate of 63%. At the end, each group made presentation of their proposals which have been successfully approved after intense discussions. Lectures were very interactive and participants very active, with close supports from assistant instructors.

In a closing ceremony, Mr. Yukio Ishida, Director of JICA Liaison Office in HCMC, closed the Training Course by thanking and encouraging both participants and instructors for their outstanding achievement.

It should be noted that the working atmosphere was very welcoming thanks to our Vietnamese colleagues who worked tirelessly to make our stay the most comfortable possible. Prof. Tran Diep Tuan of UMP Vice Dean welcomed us by setting a friendly gathering. Prof. Nguyen Thy Khue, Vice director of the HCMC Medical Association and UMP an associate professor of UMP Department of Endocrinology, supervised the overall implementation of the course. Dr. Nguyen Quang Vinh with supports from Dr. Tran The Trung and other active assistant instructors took initiative and active roles in managing daily activities.

We are much obliged to participants, course organizers, project managers, and sponsors and look forward to the Training Course V-2 which will be focusing on data analysis.
